Pharmaceutical compounding is the art and science of preparing medications from scratch to accomodate the unique needs of the patient.
The California Board of Pharmacy defines compounding as "(1) Altering the dosage form or delivery system of a drug, (2) Altering the strength of a drug, (3) Combining components or active ingredients, (4) Preparing a drug product from chemicals or bulk drug substances."
Additionally, the Board of Pharmacy has many regulations addressing pharmaceutical compounding to ensure that pharmacists are mixing medications safely and effectively.
The answer to this is nearly limitless! Below is a short list of possible dosage forms, but on occasion we have been known to formulate a completely new dosage form for a unique situation.

You may need a compound for several reasons. Most commonly, the medication strength or dosage form that your prescriber believes is best for you is not commercially available. However, there are also situations where patients are allergic to an ingredient (dye, preservative, lactose, or other filler), or the medication is discontinued or not yet commercially available.
Sometimes we just make medications easier to take by flavoring them, changing oral to topical doses, or creating specialty animal treats.
Compounded medications are rarely the first line of therapy, but often the most successful for treatment!
